Why do we need New Year Resolutions?
The Art of Growing as a Person lies in having dreams, creating a map and working towards the meaningful life. When asked, many answer that they haven't set goals for personal development. Why not start now?
The way our brain works is no mystery. We are, in many ways, what we think. What you set focus on, starts to grow. What you think and how you think about it, determines what you start thinking daily. The most discussions you carry throughout the hours you are awake is with yourself. Pay attention to this. Are you having optimistic discussions that could start with the Why. How can you be better for the world?
The most discussions you carry throughout the hours you are awake is with yourself.
This way of thinking according to Martin Seligman, who is the "Father" of Positive Psychology, and who also states that there is no shortcut to happiness, could be the simple plan for happiness: work from having a Pleasant Life to a Good Life with the purpose of finding a Meaningful Life. This is how he describes these different Lifes:
- The pleasant life: a life that successfully pursues the positive emotions about the present, past, and future.
- The good life: using your signature strengths to obtain abundant gratification (through activities we like doing) in the main realms of your life.
- The meaningful life: using your signature strengths and virtues in the service of something much larger than you are. (Seligman 2002).
A New Year's Resolution is an excellent way to dig deeper. It is a good time to look back and take time to think about the future. One should dare to dream. These questions are great to start with:
- What are your signature strengths?
- What are your core values / virtues?
- What will you make happen the coming year that will take you closer to the fulfillment you have defined meaningful to you?
Due to our combusted ways of lives with the bombardment of work and entertainment, we need New Year's Resolutions to remind us daily of our future endeavours and to focus us on having clear and optimistic daily discussions with ourselves.
